Into the Great Wide Open.

All the papers are full of smog but thankfully all our cities aren’t. If your place of residence isn’t one that has people gasping for breath, then read on. The Outdoors, when they are truly Great, have many benefits for both Mom and Baby.

  1. Nap in the lap of nature.

Who can deny the benefits of a nice long nap on a busy Monday morning (eat your hearts out, all you people working hard in office!) Babies who get to nap outdoors on mild winter days have deeper and more blissful rest as the colder air helps them sleep longer. It also makes them healthier in the long run. (And get into the habit of taking more Mondays off from office when they grow up ).

2. A sight for sore eyes.

A recent study found that babies who spend time playing outside have reduced risk of developing Myopia or near-sightedness. In fact a baby’s chances of developing Myopia dropped by 2%, for every additional hour spent outdoors. So, take your baby for a spin in her pram. And let her take in the sights.

3.The nurturing mother nature.

When babies spend time outside, they get to look at the sky, smell the flowers, watch the rustling leaves and listen to birds chirping (so much better than people tweeting). This has a calming and soothing effect on them, according to Paediatrician Gro Nylander. The sun is also the best source of Vitamin D, under the, uh, sun! So let it do your baby a whole lot of good. (But don’t forget to apply some sunscreen lotion!)

4.Socially not awkward.

Playing outdoors makes babies more confident. It also fosters, ‘social, emotional and cognitive competencies’ making him more self-assured in his growing years.

5. Fit mom. Hit mom.

Parents (and grandparents) who take babies out of doors often, also spend a lot of time in the sun themselves (Vitamin D, remember?). Walking, strolling, pushing the pram, picking up the little one and basically burning a whole load of calories. All these little expeditions not only make the adults fitter, they also help them meet other parents and grandparents (of similar age). Taking social interaction out of Facebook and making it face-to-face.

6. Stand at ease. Attention.

Playing outside, especially with others kids increases the kid’s attention span. Millions of kids suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and studies have shown that green outdoor settings appear to reduce ADHD symptoms in kids. So, why not start at an early age?
